The Story of the Streetlight Effect

There’s an old parable that goes like this:

A drunk man is searching for his lost keys under a streetlight.

A police officer walks by and asks.

“What are you doing?”

“Looking for my keys,” the man replies.

“Did you lose them here?”

“No,” he says, “but this is where the light is.”

This story is the foundation of something called The Streetlight Effect.

The tendency to look for answers where it’s easiest, not where the truth actually lies.

It’s tempting to stay where it’s familiar:

  • The assumptions we’ve always believed

  • The routines we’ve always followed

  • The strategies we’ve always trusted

  • The metrics we’ve always measured

But comfort doesn’t always equal clarity.

Sometimes we’re just like that man under the streetlight.

Searching where it’s convenient, not where the truth lives.

It takes real courage to leave the comfort zone.
To step into the dark.
To sit with uncertainty.
To explore what you’ve avoided.

But that’s where transformation begins.

So ask yourself this weekend:

What truths am I missing simply because I’ve been too afraid to step away from the streetlight?

The answers you’re looking for often hide in the very questions you avoid.

This story got me thinking.

We often turn down opportunities because we’re afraid.

Afraid of being judged, afraid of failing, afraid of heartbreak.

But here's the truth.

We come from a land of greatness.

Our ancestors were bold, visionary, and courageous.

We can't afford to live small.

We can't stay hidden in the safety of our shell.

So ask yourself.

Are we so afraid of living that we’ve stopped truly living?

Seek clarity.

Ask difficult questions.

Work on yourself relentlessly.

Read. Write. Grow.

Become the person your younger self dreamed you’d be.

Brave, kind, curious, and real.

Live as though all your ancestors are living through you.
